The kitchen, for many of us is the hub of the home.
It is so much more than just a place to cook, it is a place to entertain guests, a place to unwind after a hard day’s work and a place to sit and reflect. A kitchen should be the focal part of the home and should be warm and inviting.
If your kitchen has got a bit lacklustre, giving your kitchen a quirky overhaul will only add to its appeal especially when it comes to entertaining guests and will make your kitchen not only functional but a place that you love to spend time in. Here are some quirky ways that you can liven up your kitchen and make it the centrepiece of your home;
Interesting Use Of Lighting
Particularly in cases of small kitchens, light is everything. Light will boost the overall appearance and feel of a small kitchen, making it feel light, airy and promote the feeling of space. Suspended ceiling lights can add a quirky yet striking touch to a kitchen. A statement piece like a chandelier can give a large kitchen a very grand feel. Or even one or two strategically placed lava lamps can give a kitsch, unique feel to the kitchen.
Resurface Your Old Cabinets
If your cabinets have seen better days and perhaps you don’t have the funds to do a complete redesign, why not give the cabinets a new lease of life with a lick of paint. Mix and match, combine bright colours with more traditional wood finishes or go for vintage by distressing the cabinets for a ‘lived-in’ look. Also consider updating the cabinet fixtures with some really unusual and striking handles.
Inventive Work Surfaces
A kitchen work surface screams ‘ Look at me’ and can make or break a kitchen, no matter what other accessories you have in your kitchen, the work surface commands attention. So it makes sense to really go all out to make an impact. Work surfaces need to be practical but work surfaces instantly catch the eye so impress your guests with quirky work surfaces made from materials such as Copper, Laminate tiling or even more quirkier still, Concrete.
Statement Pieces And Accessories
Sometimes all it can take is a few carefully chosen accessories and pieces in your kitchen to create an unusual, eccentric kitchen that turns heads. A contemporary kitchen tap can make a real statement piece, such as a Quooker tap. Magnetic spice jars make an interesting feature for those who want everything on display and within easy reach can attach these jars to the fridge.
Splash Of Colour
A vibrant splash of colour throughout one area of the kitchen can look really eye catching without being too overwhelming. Whether its paint, wallpaper or even decorative tiling, smaller kitchens will benefit from paler muted shades, whereas a big kitchen can take all manner of bright and funky colours.
